Bimatoprost is a type of medication primarily used to treat glaucoma and ocular eye hypertension, both conditions stemming from an usually high amount of pressure in the eyes. This medication has been proven to prevent ocular damage and reduce eye pain by lowering the amount of pressure in the eyes to within a normal range.
Function
Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin drug that was first used to treat eye diseases like glaucoma. It's called Lumigan. However, during the course of treatment, Chemicalbook patients were surprised to see a significant increase in the diameter, length and density of their eyelashes. Since then, bimatprost has been used in clinical trials of eyelash treatments.
Common side effects include red eyes, dry eyes, change in color of the eyes, blurry vision, and cataracts. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is generally not recommended.] It is a prostaglandin analog and works by increasing the outflow of aqueous fluid from the eyes.
Application
The treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension in adult patients, either alone or in combination with a beta blocker
Studies have shown bimatoprost to be more effective thanin reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) and at least as effective as the prostaglandin analogs latanoprost and travoprostin reducing IOP.
Cosmetic
Bimatoprost may be used to treat small or underdeveloped eyelashes. The medical term for this is treatment of hypotrichosis; however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval is for purely cosmetic purposes (see Prostaglandin F receptor#Clinical significance).
