Artemether is a medication used for the treatment of malaria. The injectable form is specifically used for severe malaria rather than quinine. It may not be as effective as artesunate. It is given by injection in a muscle. It is also available by mouth in combination with lumefantrine, known as artemether/lumefantrin
Function
1.Artemether is an antimalarial agent. It is a water-soluble hemisuccinate derivative of dihydroartemisinin.
2.Artemether is a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from Artemisia annua, a herb that has traditionally been used in China for the treatment of malaria.
3.Artemether and its active metabolite dihydroartemisinin are potent blood schizonticides, active against the ring stage of the parasite.
4.Artemether is ideal for the treatment of severe malaria, including cerebral malaria. It is also active against chloroquine and mefloquine resistant strains of P. falciparum.
5.Artemether is unstable in neutral solution and is therefore only available for injections as artesunic acid.
Application
Artemisinin also known as Qinghaosu (Chinese), and its derivatives are a group of drugs that possess the most rapid action of all current drugs against Plasmodium falciparum malaria.Treatments containing an artemisinin derivative (artemisinin-combination therapies, ACTs) are now standard treatment worldwide for P. falciparum malaria. The starting compound artemisinin is isolated from the plant Artemisia annua, sweet wormwood, an herb employed in Chinese traditional medicine.
