D-Biotin, also known as vitamin H or coenzyme R, is a water-soluble B-vitamin (vitamin B7).It is composed of a ureido (tetrahydroimidizalone) ring fused. A valeric acid substituent is attached to one of the carbon atoms of the ring. Biotin is a coenzyme for carboxylase enzymes, involved in the synthesis of fatty acids, isoleucine, and valine, and in gluconeogenesis.Biotin is a form of vitamin B found in foods. Biotin helps the body break down fats, carbohydrates, and other substances.Biotin has been used in alternative medicine as a likely effective aid in treating or preventing biotin deficiency. Biotin deficiency can be caused by malnutrition, rapid weight loss, long-term tube feeding, and other medical conditions.Biotin has also been used to treat seborrhea (skin rash) in babies. However, research has shown that biotin may not be effective in treating this condition.
