Carbomer also called Arbopol or Carboxypoly-methylene is a generic name for synthetic high molecular weight polymers used as thickening, dispersing, suspending and emulsifying agents in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. They may be homopolymers, crosslinked with an pentaerythritol, sucrose or propylene. Carbomers are found in the market as white and fluffy powders. They have the ability to absorb, retain water and swell to many times their original volume.
Function
Carbomer and acrylic crosslinking resins and these products are currently the most widely used in topical emulsions, creams and gels.Carbomer system is an excellent gel matrix in neutral environment, with crystal appearance and hand feel.
