Arabinose is an aldopentose - a monosaccharide containing five carbon atoms, and including an aldehyde functional group. Natural monosaccharides are often dextrorotory and are chemically reducable to D-glyceraldehyde. However, L-arabinose is found in nature as a component of biopolymers such as hemicellulose and pectin and can be metabolised by microorganisms as a carbon source.
As such, L-arabinose is in fact more common than D-arabinose in nature.
L-arabinose is a very common type of five-carbon carbohydrates, readily available in nature and absolutely safe to use as a weight-loss remedy. In fact, for a number of years this natural chemical has been incorporated in the production of flavours and pharmaceutical drugs and even in the ethanol industry.
L-arabinose is plentiful in sugar beets, apples, tomatoes, and other tasty fruits and vegetables with a high sugar content.

L-arabinose works to inhibit a specific enzyme that blocks the utilization of the monosaccharide sucrose. Several rat studies have shown that L-arabinose prevents sucrose, which is present in most grains, starches, fruits, and other carbohydrate-rich foods, from turning into glucose and fructose - simple sugars that are readily absorbed into the bloodstream.
